Hiding The Truth

Insights | HIDING THE TRUTH

The Ugly Side Of Lying

We may find truth-tellers more attractive than liars- even when we don't know who's who.

HUMANS ARE GENERALLY poor lie detectors, and we tend to assume that others are being truthful unless we have reason to

suspect otherwise. Yet subtle and subconscious social evaluation may still help us steer clear of liars, new research finds:

We may instinctively judge truth-tellers to be more attractive,

even when we have no idea who's lying and who's not.

In three studies published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, participants watched videos of male and female subjects answering questions; some had been instructed to lie, while others told the truth. Critically, participants who watched the videos were not told that some subjects were being dishonest.

They rated their attraction to each subject, as well as their perceived warmth and openness. Those who told the truth were consistently seen as more attractive than those who lied—a finding that appeared especially true for female subjects.

It may be that we're instinctively drawn to truth-tellers because they seem more inviting, the findings suggest. Indeed, honest subjects were rated as warmer and more open, which in turn was tied to increased attractiveness. Uncoopera-tive, closed-off behavior has been linked to deception in past studies, the researchers note, so even if we don't consciously label such behavior as deceitful, we may still be instinctively turned off by it.

The idea that anyone could be lying to us at any time can feel overwhelming

Yet we may not always need to actively consider veracity to steer clear of liars, the researchers note. When trying to spot a liar, considering whom we find less attractive could be a major clue.
