Rivalry

1 Corinthians 1


Rivalry





“I urge you … in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.”—1 Corinthians 1:10 CSV





The church in Corinth was being torn apart. Divisions pitted groups against each other. The disputes were so intense that Paul heard an account from miles away. The problem? There was rivalry among them. This led to conflicts regarding direction and leadership. Some declared allegiance to Paul. Others said they followed Cephas or Apollos (vs. 12–13).


There were questions about responsibilities.

These factors can infect any group of believers, churches or ministries, marriages or families. The answer? Submit to the lordship of Jesus and boast only in Him (v. 31). Focus on Him, and be sure He is preeminent. He is the foundation for our lives (1 Corinthians 2:1–5).


Seek God’s wisdom, not ideas that may seem popular in the world. Focus on harmony with other believers, and make “every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3).

We stay on track as we hunger for the Word. Pray for other believers, particularly those with whom we might have differences. Have the attitude of a servant and dedicate yourself to the tasks God has given to us. Treat other believers as coworkers, not rivals. Look to God for your rewards (1 Corinthians 3:1–9).


Do you feel a spirit of rivalry with other believers? Or are you united with Jesus as your Lord? Pray for those with whom you might have differences. Focus on serving Jesus.


Reflection Question: Do you need to recommit to having a servant’s attitude?


Prayer

Father, I humble myself before You. Help me have the attitude of a servant. I seek the unity of the body. In Jesus’ name, amen.
