v.15 And it came to pass as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass which the Lord has made known unto us.

• The angels were gone – implies that the angels shared the message and left.


• Let us now go and see – speaks to the level of urgency in viewing what they’ve been told.


• Which is come to pass – speaks to the level of their faith in believing that what they heard had already happened.


• The Lord has made known unto us – speaks to what has been exclusively made known to them (i.e., the shepherds).


v.16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

 

• They with haste – refers to their level of enthusiasm and excitement. In that the shepherds hurried,indicated the seriousness and genuineness of the matter.

• And found Mary, Joseph, and the babe – speaks to the confirmation in what they were told is what has been realized. The test of their faith was their immediate response. The shepherds had obeyed the angel’s message with haste.

• Lying in a manger – refers the bread of heaven lying in a feeding trough. Yes, how appropriate it is for the true bread from heaven to be lying or placed in a feeding trough for all mankind to eat from.

 

v.17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

 

• When they had seen it – speaks to the fact of what they were told is indeed what they witnessed and observed.

• They made known abroad – means that they told their story while establishing exactly what they were there for.

• Which was told them – simply put, the shepherdsverbally shared the gospel message to everyone in the stable. Once they had been privileged to experience God’s presence, they were more willinglyto take on the responsibility of sharing theirexperience by spreading and proclaiming the Gospelof Christmas which is the Good News of the Gospel!!!

Note the three distinct responses in the next three verses:

 



v.18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

 

(1) And all they that heard it wondered: which means to be astonished, amazed, or marvel and perhaps even doubtful. In other words, why shepherds?

 

v.19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

 

(2) But Mary kept and pondered: While the word keptrefers to regard as great value and worth; it is to becherish, honorable, and to pondered implies to how much the news weighted on the mind; to give carefulconsidered thought to; and to quietly reflected there upon. Generally, a new mother treasures everything about their new baby, so it is only natural that Mary treasures the amazing story that the shepherds told her and that the saying might force her to ponder the matter in her heart. Although at first, Mary could not understand everything what God was doing; yet, as her life with Jesus unfolded, she wholeheartedly embraced God’s will for her. Mary represents Christians who desire to believe God but have honest questions or doubts about matters of faith. 

 

v.20 And the shepherds returned glorifying and praisingGod for all the things that they had heard and seen as it was told unto them.

 

• Glorifying – exalting, elevating, worshiping, adoring, and promoting

• Praising – commending, applauding, celebrating, honoring, and extolling

• Heard – learned, told, informed, notified, alerted, and forewarned

• Seen – witnessed, observed, noticed, looked at, viewed, or scrutinized

 

(3) Shepherds returned glorifying and praising God: while the word glorifying denotes to bestow honor or admiration upon another, praising is the act of expressing the acknowledgement of receiving favor or approval. The praise and worship of the shepherds came after two previous events: divine revelation about what they hear which speaks to speaks to that which reveals, disclosure, exposure, or uncovers and divine confirmation about what they now have seenwhich denotes the proof, evidence, validated, authenticated, certified, and verified.
